The Functions and Efficacy of Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek Seed (Trigonella foenum-graecum)

Description: Fenugreek seeds are oblate or rectangular in shape, with a yellow-green to yellow-brown surface. They possess a characteristic aromatic odor and a slightly bitter taste. In traditional medicine, they are classified as warm in nature and are recognized for their hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, and cosmeceutical properties.

1. Hypoglycemic Effect

The soluble dietary fiber fraction present in fenugreek seeds inhibits the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, thereby attenuating postprandial blood glucose excursions in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

2. Hypolipidemic Effect

Fenugreek seeds reduce total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), while concurrently elevating high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), thus conferring a protective effect against cardiovascular disease.

3. Cosmeceutical / Skin-Beautifying Effect

Fenugreek seeds contain a high moisture content, which contributes to skin hydration and nourishment, resulting in improved skin smoothness and overall complexion.
